Our History

Spinal Cord Injury Nova Scotia, known formerly as The Canadian Paraplegic Association of Nova Scotia – was founded in 1952 by WWII veterans who had sustained spinal cord injuries. These trailblazers helped create the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, opened the world’s first spinal cord injury rehabilitation centre, and laid the groundwork for a nationwide support system.

For over 72 years, we’ve carried their legacy forward; growing and adapting to support all people with spinal cord injuries. We’re part of Spinal Cord Injury Canada, a national network made up of eight provincial organizations. Together, we work to improve the lives of people with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities across the country.

From the moment of injury through every stage of recovery and life beyond, we offer flexible, person-centered support—always guided by the mission our founders began.

OUR MISSION

At Spinal Cord Injury Nova Scotia, we believe everyone has the potential to live a full and independent life. Our mission is to support Nova Scotians with spinal cord injuries and mobility disabilities by removing barriers and creating opportunities for full participation in the community.

We take a holistic, person-first approach. We offer tailored support, connect people to helpful resources, and celebrate their strengths and successes. We also extend our services to families and caregivers, helping them feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout their journey.

Together, we seek to build a more inclusive, accessible Nova Scotia—where everyone has the opportunity to live and thrive.
